Paul has held teaching positions at UCLA, the University of Pennsylvania and Boston University. As the 21-year Head (now professor emeritus) of the Department of Philosophy at New Mexico State University, Paul served actively in faculty government and on committees dealing with problems ranging from retention to basic skills and undergraduate education reform. He has employed a number of innovative teaching techniques including the Skinner-inspired Keller Plan. He is the recipient of numerous educational grants and honors including the prestigious Burlington Northern Teaching Award. He is the author of several books, book chapters and many articles dealing with issues in both philosophy and psychology.

Paul coached youth soccer for 11 years and had four of his players reach the professional ranks. He believes strongly in the Coaching-Teaching connection. His innovative approach to improving student performance was outlined in the paper "Why Students Fail", presented at the Fifth European Congress of Psychology in Dublin, Ireland.

Paul received his B.A. from the University of Colorado, Boulder (magna cum laude- Philosophy) and his Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania.
